Description

This unit explores the importance of primary healthcare and the significant role it plays in maintaining community health. Students will delve into the key concepts of primary care, healthcare access, patient confidentiality, and motivational interviewing, as well as investigate acute and chronic diseases. Through research, Socratic seminars, hands-on activities, and creative projects, students will develop a comprehensive understanding of how primary care functions within the healthcare system and its critical role in disease prevention, patient support, and equitable access to care. Additionally, students will enhance their skills in critical thinking, empathy, and collaboration by designing an ideal primary care clinic and practicing effective communication techniques like motivational interviewing. 

Objectives

  1. Understand Primary Care: Define primary care and explain its purpose within the healthcare system, including its role in promoting preventive care, managing chronic illnesses, and ensuring access to healthcare services. 

  2. Explore Healthcare Access Issues: Analyze disparities in healthcare access, particularly in underserved communities, and evaluate solutions to address these challenges. 

  3. Differentiate Acute and Chronic Diseases: Distinguish between acute and chronic diseases, understanding their symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and long-term management. 

  4. Apply Motivational Interviewing Techniques: Recognize and practice effective communication strategies, such as motivational interviewing, that promote patient empowerment and behavior change. 

  5. Create Patient-Centered Healthcare Solutions: Design an ideal primary care clinic, considering factors like location, services, patient accessibility, and the use of technology to support patient care. 

  6. Discuss the Importance of Patient Confidentiality: Understand and articulate the ethical significance of maintaining patient confidentiality in healthcare. 

  7. Foster Critical Thinking and Empathy: Engage in discussions, role-playing, and presentations that promote empathy, respect for others’ experiences, and thoughtful solutions to healthcare challenges.
