Dentistry: Oral Health:  More than Brushing Your Teeth

This unit explores the importance of Oral Health and how it is more than just brushing your teeth. Students will investigate the importance of Oral Health and the life courses that takes place from an early age to old age the causes of insufficient care of Oral Health that can lead to the damage of physical health, mental and emotional well-being, education and awareness.  

Objectives

  1. By the end of the lesson, students will be able to identify and describe the different parts of a tooth, name the various types of teeth, and explain their functions, as demonstrated through a labeling activity or quiz. 

  2. Students will be able to identify at least three common oral health mistakes and propose actionable strategies to improve oral hygiene, supported by examples from personal or community practices. 

  3. Students will analyze a health report to identify oral health disparities within their community, summarizing key findings and discussing potential causes and solutions in a written reflection or group discussion. 

  4. Students will understand the process of dental cleaning and the causes of cavities and bad breath, explaining these concepts in a presentation or demonstration, such as a skit or model. 

  5. Students will explain how oral health impacts overall body health, identifying at least two specific connections, and creatively demonstrate their understanding through a project, such as a poster, video, or role-play activity. 

Student Introduction

This unit introduces students to the fundamentals of dentistry and dental health. Through a series of interactive lessons, students will engage in activities that explore the anatomy of teeth, the effects of various substances on dental health, and proper oral care routines. They will design models, observe simulations, watch instructional videos, and participate in discussions to deepen their understanding of effective dental care practices. The unit also includes a review of an oral health report, encouraging students to analyze and discuss key takeaways in a collaborative setting.
