In this unit, students will delve into the fascinating world of the heart, learning how it functions, how to maintain its health, and how to recognize common heart problems. They’ll explore the heart's structure and its essential role in pumping blood throughout the body, while also understanding how diet, exercise, and lifestyle choices contribute to heart health. Additionally, they’ll learn about common heart issues like heart disease and hypertension, including their symptoms, treatment, and prevention. The unit features hands-on activities, engaging discussions, and creative projects, ensuring students not only gain knowledge but also apply it in practical ways. By the end, students will have a comprehensive understanding of the heart’s function, how to keep it healthy, and how to identify and address potential heart problems. 

Objectives

  1. By the end of the lesson, students will be able to identify and describe the parts of the heart and their functions, accurately labeling and explaining at least four key components. 

  2. Students will be able to explain at least three key practices and lifestyle choices that contribute to maintaining heart health, providing examples of how these practices can be incorporated into daily life. 

  3. Students will be able to describe common heart diseases, including identifying at least two causes, three risk factors, and recognizing the signs and symptoms of a heart attack, demonstrating their understanding through a written summary or discussion. 

  4. Students will analyze the effects of diet, exercise, and stress on heart health by comparing and contrasting their impact in a written report or group presentation. 

  5. Students will create and present an educational tool, such as a brochure, poster, or digital presentation, that effectively communicates key information about heart health and the symptoms of heart disease to family and community members.
