Description
This unit on mental health aims to provide students with a foundational understanding of key mental health concepts and the skills to support their own mental well-being and that of their peers. Throughout the lessons, students will explore topics such as general mental health, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, bullying, and peer pressure, gaining insight into how these issues impact emotional and psychological health. Students will engage in group discussions, research activities, and reflective exercises, allowing them to deepen their awareness of mental health challenges, recognize warning signs in themselves and others, and discover effective coping strategies. Objectives
- Define and Understand Mental Health Concepts: Explain the importance of mental health and differentiate between normal emotional experiences and more serious mental health conditions, such as anxiety, depression, and eating disorders.
- Recognize Signs and Symptoms of Mental Health Challenges: Identify the common signs of anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and the impact of bullying and peer pressure on mental well-being.
- Explore Coping Strategies: Understand and practice healthy coping mechanisms to manage stress, anxiety, and other emotional challenges, including mindfulness, talking to trusted adults, and engaging in self-care activities.
- Promote Positive Peer Relationships: Develop empathy and respect for others by recognizing how bullying, peer pressure, and societal pressures can negatively affect mental health and by fostering an inclusive and supportive environment.
- Raise Awareness and Advocate for Mental Health: Collaborate on creative projects, such as infographics, to raise awareness about mental health issues and to promote strategies for maintaining emotional well-being within the school and community.
- Access Mental Health Resources: Learn how and where to seek help for themselves or others when facing mental health challenges, and understand the importance of talking to school counselors, trusted adults, or using local mental health services.
