Valley 6: Valley Fever

Description

This unit explores Valley Fever, a fungal infection primarily affecting the lungs, and its impact on respiratory health within the Central Valley. Students will investigate the etiology, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of Valley Fever while gaining a deeper understanding of lung anatomy and function. The unit integrates concepts from biology, health sciences, and environmental science to provide a comprehensive overview of how infectious diseases can impact respiratory health.

Objectives

  1. By the end of the lesson, students will be able to describe the structure and function of the respiratory system, particularly the lungs, and demonstrate this understanding through a diagram or explanation.

  2. Students will create a model of the lungs, accurately identifying and labeling the different parts, and will explain the function of each part in a presentation or written report.

  3. Students will learn how to accurately count respirations on a patient and describe the characteristics of the patient's respirations, such as rate, depth, and rhythm, as demonstrated in a skills assessment or practical activity.

  4. Students will become familiar with Valley Fever, including its causes, symptoms, and prevention, and will develop a strategy or project to promote Valley Fever education within the community.

Student Introduction

Welcome to the study of the respiratory system, where you'll explore the intricate workings of the lungs and the critical role they play in sustaining life. In this unit, you'll delve into the anatomy of the respiratory system, examine common respiratory diseases, and gain a deeper understanding of Valley Fever, a significant health concern in certain regions. To get started, review the website about the respiratory system by exploring this resource: Respiratory System

As you move through this unit, you'll learn how the respiratory system functions, the challenges it faces, and the importance of maintaining respiratory health. Special attention will be given to Valley Fever, a fungal infection prevalent in certain areas, which presents unique challenges in diagnosis and treatment. Engage with the content, explore case studies, and prepare to understand how respiratory diseases impact both individual health and public health on a broader scale.
