Objectives

Immigrant Health 

California and especially the Central Valley is home to the largest population of foreign-born individuals.  It is imperative to understand immigrant health and how extenuating factors play a part in treating foreign born individuals or mixed status families.   

  1. Understand health risks that immigrants face when settling in their new country. 

  2. Review the demographics of immigrant patients. 

  3. Introduce factors that can affect access and quality of healthcare.

Activity Options

ACTIVITY ONE: Review of Immigrant Health Issue  

Read the Immigrant Health Issue.  This chapter provides many considerations for working with a community that has a diverse population that includes those that have immigrated.  Answer the three discussion questions at the end of this chapter.    

ACTIVITY TWO: Caring for an Immigrant Patient  

Review the lecture given by Dr. Wheeler about working with immigrant patients.  Take the QUIZ to show understanding of the material provided.  

ACTIVITY THREE:  A Pace to Breathe Documentary (90 minutes) - Need UCSF access 

Documentary that represents the experience of people that immigrated from different countries.  The the documentary is 90minutes and does require access through a UCSF coordinator's portal to view.  After watching the video, students can get into groups and pick one of the people groups represented to look into deeper.  Answer the following questions to present to class: 

  • Name of the people group and country/countries they are coming from 
  • Reasons for immigrating to the US 
  • Examples of how they arrived her 
  • Barriers they face and how addressed 
  • Unique health concerns to be considered and how addressed 
  • Helpful resources  

When creating your presentation make sure to consider the words that you use.  Refer to document Language Matters to make sure you are using strength-based language. 

ACTIVITY FOUR: Reading: Breaking It Down  

Resource created by Migration Policy, From Fear to Solidarity: Migration Policy on immigrant health. We will need four to five groups – Executive summary and Conclusions and Recommendations. Instead of everyone reading the entire report, groups will focus on their divided assigned reading and share information with fellow classmates. In groups, take your assigned section and break down information that can be digested and shared with fellow classmates. When deciding what information to share, updating data should be considered.          

End of Unit Project:   

Near the end of the  Immigrant Health Issue chapter, there are "Key Concepts" that are listed.  Choose one that is of particular interest to you to investigate further and create a presentation as to why this concept is important.

  • Introduce Key Concept. State your key concept and interest in presenting.    
  • Give three reasons that support why your concept is should be considered as relevant to healthcare. Make sure to give examples and supporting evidence  
  • Provide information on how you would address the concern.
