Mental Health Disorders

Description

Mental health is a critical aspect of overall well-being, affecting how we think, feel, and behave. This series of lessons introduces students to key concepts surrounding mental health and psychiatric disorders, aiming to increase awareness and reduce the stigma that often surrounds these issues. By exploring common mental health conditions, such as anxiety, depression, and PTSD, students will gain an understanding of how these disorders impact daily life and the importance of seeking help.
The lessons also cover the DSM-5, the diagnostic manual used by professionals, and include discussions about the current youth mental health crisis. Through interactive activities like case studies, a Socratic seminar, and a mental health awareness campaign, students will not only learn how to recognize and understand mental health challenges but also actively engage in promoting awareness and empathy within their school community.

Student Introduction

Welcome to the Mental Health unit! Mental health affects every part of our lives—from how we feel and think to how we connect with others and handle challenges. But, despite its importance, mental health is often surrounded by stigma and misunderstanding. In this unit, we’ll explore mental health with open minds and hearts, gaining insight into common conditions like anxiety, depression, and PTSD.

You’ll learn about the DSM-5, the diagnostic manual professionals use, and explore the youth mental health crisis through thought-provoking case studies, discussions, and even a school-based awareness campaign. Here are some big questions we’ll tackle together:

  • How do mental health conditions impact daily life, and why is seeking help so important?
  • What role do societal pressures play in the mental health challenges young people face today?
  • How can we, as a school community, promote understanding and empathy?

This isn’t just about learning facts; it’s about building empathy, reducing stigma, and becoming empowered to make a positive difference in your community. By the end of this unit, you’ll have the knowledge and skills to help create a more supportive environment for mental health awareness. Ready to make an impact? Let’s start the journey.
