Pediatrics – Child Development (Milestones and Common Illnesses)

Description

Students will be introduced to what a pediatrician looks for as a child develops by understanding milestones, common childhood illnesses and terminology (including Spanish).

Starting Spring 2021, JDA students should have been provided an overview of vaccines that can be reviewed again with a deeper understanding.

Objectives

  1. By the end of the lesson, students will be able to understand and describe key child development milestones, and explain how pediatricians use these milestones to identify developmental concerns, as demonstrated through a case study analysis or group discussion.

  2. Students will become familiar with the pediatric vaccine schedule, identifying the recommended vaccines and their timing, and will demonstrate this knowledge through a quiz or timeline activity.

  3. Students will understand common childhood illnesses, including their symptoms, diagnosis, and treatments, and will apply this knowledge in a simulated patient consultation or written report.

  4. Students will become familiar with common pediatric terms, including key terms in Spanish, and will accurately use these terms in a role-playing activity or case scenario.

  5. Students will learn and apply the mnemonic for common pediatric vesicular rashes, using it to identify and describe conditions in a quiz or diagram activity.

  6. Students will creatively educate others about a pediatric topic, such as a specific illness, developmental milestone, or vaccine, through a project like a poster, video, or presentation aimed at a lay audience.
