Allied Health

Description

Students will learn what Allied Heath is and how the career field defined. They will be exposed to the different professions within the field, and will be provided a few examples. Within the examples, students will gain knowledge about what the career path covers, what education is needed, where can you find those professionals, and what type of salary do they make. Students will explore the field of Allied Health, including its definition and various professions. They will learn about key careers like Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist, Pharmacy Assistant, EMT/Paramedic, Radiology Technician, and Respiratory Therapist. For each profession, students will discover job responsibilities, educational requirements, work settings, and salary expectations.

Objectives

  1. To understand the scope of Allied Health Professionals  

  2. To breakdown specific careers within the Allied Health Profession 

  3. Allow students the opportunity to explore Allied Health Careers on their own 

  4. To understand the need and benefits of these specific jobs in our area  

  5. Build knowledge regarding specific education requirements for each position  

  6. Learn about the growth within the field of Allied Health Careers  

Activity Options

1. Activity: Exploring Allied Health Careers Using the BLS Website 

  • In small groups of 3-4 students, select 2 allied health careers from the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook website (https://www.bls.gov/ooh/healthcare/home.htm). Prepare a presentation to share your findings with the class. This could be a PowerPoint, a poster, or a digital infographic. 
    • Describe the daily tasks and responsibilities of each chosen career 
    • Identify the educational qualifications and training needed. Explore various Educational paths 
    • Analyze the projected job growth and demand for each career. 
    • Summarize the median annual salary and salary range for each career. 
    • Describe the typical work settings and conditions.
