Cultures in my Community 

Cultures in a community is defined as a living expression of the culture of everyday life that can be learned through experiences, education, and communication from one human being to another. When cultures are better understood, it connects individuals further and allows for improved health, tolerance and opportunities with one another. 

  1. Understand the various cultures in communities  

  2. Review how cultures impact our experiences with one another  

  3. Educate and understand how culture ties with health and opportunities 

  4. Build a better understanding of cultures in the world through activities

ACTIVITY ONE: Celebrating Culture in Our Community

Watch video:  Cultural Organizing in California Central Valley.  Pick a cultural group that is found in the central valley and create a slide presentation.  Remind students that culture can be found in a group of people with similar identity, not necessarily a shared ethnicity. Here is a definition to share:  https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/culture Brainstorm different groups of people in the central valley that have a shared identity.  Students should provide a description of group, then pick 3 things that you identify that the group shares.  Some topics that can be included in slide presentation: 

  • Food 
  • Celebrated holidays 
  • Language; including popular greetings 
  • Clothing 
  • Beliefs 
  • Thoughts on society or politics

ACTIVITY TWO: Expert Comparison

Website: What is Culture? The definition of culture from world experts  

This website has many "experts" that give their definition of culture.  Pick 2 that you find the most interesting.  Are there things that you agree or disagree with?  How do they relate to our community? Make sure to explain your answer.   

ACTIVITY THREE: What's Valued in a Culture

Write one sentence or phrase about each topic. Then rate each item from 1-10 (1 is most important) according to what value this topic has in your culture
