Objectives

Ethics and Cultural Understanding 

Ethical consideration should be at the core of all decisions.  However, what does that mean or what does that look like?  The following resources will take students through the steps of understanding ethics and the principles are at the heart of healthcare decisions.  Students will also explore how this relates to cultural competence. 

1. Define ethics and understand the difference between ethics vs. morals. 

2. Understand the four core principals as it relates to the medical field 

3. Understand ethics as of part of cultural competence

Activity Options

ACTIVITY ONE: Foundational Understanding 

Students are to review the resources under “Foundational Information” so that they understand what ethics are and how it differs from morals.  There is a chart for reference on the website.  Students should create their own for reference for the upcoming discussions.   

Provided are scenarios for students to discuss to further understand the complexity of decision making.  There are multiple scenarios, so each group can have a scenario to discuss or all groups can discuss the same scenario to see if there is consensus or differences in the response to the questions.  Link to share:  https://www.goodcharacter.com/the-daily-dilemma/   However, students should only look at situation only, not facilitator notes.

  • What is the ethical decision? 
  • What is your moral decision? 
  • Are they in agreement? Why or why not? 

ACTIVITY TWO: The Core Ethical Principals.  

Before reviewing the Core Ethical Principals, students must understand the terms equality and equity.  If students are not familiar, Equality vs. Equity is a short video to familiar them with the terms.  Access the Nearpod that includes a video with 5 discussion questions. This video is focused on understanding ethics in a healthcare setting.

Review the following videos.  Think Cultural Health Case Studies   Answer the following: 

  • Identify parts of the video that demonstrate: 
  • Autonomy 
  • Beneficence 
  • Nonmaleficience 
  • Justice 
  • What do you think of the video?  Is the video relevant?  How does it make you feel? 
  • Are there parts you agree or disagree with? 

ACTIVITY THREE: Readings and Essay 

Read and review the two essays The Ethics of Cultural Competence  and Cultural Competence:  Glimpsing the World Through Our Patients’ Eyes as we Guide Their Care  After reading the essays, write essay with following prompt:  Does ethics change when there is a cultural difference consideration?  Why or why not?    

Make sure to consider the four core ethical principles and cite your sources.  Four source minimum.
