Public Health & the Census

Description

Students will learn about the importance of completing the census every 10 years and what is actually asked in the census that impacts the health of communities like their own as well as what the results say about their determinants of health. 

Objectives

  1. Learn about what the U.S. census is 

  2. Who needs to complete the census and what is asked 

  3. How census impacts the health of communities and public health efforts 

  4. Use census.gov to search QuickFacts on communities and how the results differ depending on where you live 

  5. Inform students where they can help their family and friends complete the census 

Activity Options

  • Activity #1- Comparing & Contrasting Counties   
    • Link   
    • Use this link to have students search 3 cities/towns or counties in the state of California.  
    • Lead small group discussion with students on why a certain community may face underreporting on the census. Report out to larger group and encourage students to facilitate methods to mitigate barriers.  
    • In the future, the 2030 census will be conducted and it is important all individuals are counted.
